Milo was only a couple of weeks old when we spotted Dermoid sinus on his weekly check. It was obviously very upsetting because he already had his little personality and was otherwise as fit as a fiddle!
We had read so much info on the illness and the views of the Rhodesian Ridgeback society and although we never intended to disagree with them we found the ethics very harsh, After all if a dog can go on to have a pain free and happy life why take this chance away from them?
Milo was operated on at 9 weeks old on 16.05.07. We were very happy with the clean cut which only needed 7 stitches. Three days later he developed a large fluid formed lump under the scar, We were worried that the swelling was putting a strain on his stitches so took him back to the vets for draining. Unfortunatley the area filled back up with Serum (The bodies way of cleansing and filling the whole where the Dermoid sinus was) so he has had a drain fitted.
We are over the moon to have kept Milo alive and to see him come along well. He already sits, does basic commands, Is fully housetrained and is so well behaved.
Our Vet has already stated that she cannot believe otherwise healthy puppies are culled because of this condition, She also shares our views that the culling of this breed is very outdated and harsh and should only be done once further exploritory tests confirm that it is in-operable or extremely complicated to remove to the detriment of the dogs wellbeing.
Once Milo fully recovered we began our search for his new home, Thankfully a lovely couple wanted him and have given him a well deserved new start!
